I won't try to fool you; this braid takes practise. The most difficult part of braiding your hair with 5 strands is the fingering. I first learned how to make a simple 5-Strand Braid in a half-updo. For instructions on how to learn to do a 5 strand braid, please read this blog entry of mine.

This braid is created by French braiding and including all of the hair on the head in a circular fashion, forming a crown effect. After all of the hair is French braided, you tuck the tail around and pin it in place. This crown braid was created with a Lace-Braided Dutch Braid. A Dutch braid is made exactly like a French braid, but instead of crossing each strand over the middle strand, you cross each strand under the middle strand.

Also know as a 4-Strand Round Braid. Here are some quick instructions. To fashion this braid, divide hair into four strands. Number strands from left to right, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Take strand 1, braid it under strands 2 and 3, and then over strand 3. Take far right strand, strand 4, braid it under new strands 2 and 3 and then over strand 2. Now rename braids from left to right again as 1, 2, 3 and 4 and repeat.

The French braid is a classic that is always fashionable and quite versatile. You can vary the look by increasing or decreasing the number of strands used, or by changing the tension of the braid. Allowing a few strands to escape is sometimes a nice choice, to give a more Bohemian look, as pictured here. For a completely polished look, mist hair lightly before braiding with distilled water, or add a bit of gel to the hair. ______________________________________________________________________________
For this hairstyle, I reverse rolled each side of my hair and combined both sides to form a single rope braid. I have made some simple instructions on how to make a rope braid in this blog entry.

A Dutch Braid is really a French Braid made by crossing the middle strand over rather than under. This gives a completely different look from a normal French Braid. I rolled and then tucked the tail, secured by a couple of hair pins.
